Golf - Winter Leagues swinging into action around the county

Balla

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by McHale’s Agriculture, Castlebar, was won by John O’Connor with a score of 40pts. He finished one point in front of Paraic Cuffe with Dermot McMahon taking third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Elaine O’Hora on a score of 35pts, with Mary Conlon coming second on 32pts, and Marie Flanagan third on 31pts. The men’s category prize was won by Seamus Cleary on 35pts. Balla Golf Club is offering a deal at present where for the price of 12 months membership you will get 15 months bringing you up to January 2013.

Ballinrobe

The Sunday competition was won by Eddie Killeen with a score of 42pts, Vincent O’Connell came second on 39pts with Kieran O’Reilly taking the last of the placings in third on 39pts. The gross went to Michael C Burke, with Aaron D’Arcy taking the best front nine prize and Robert Fox the best back nine.

Geraldine Ryan won the ladies’ competition on 38pts, with the Cat 1 going to Concepta D’Arcy, and Triona Kelly taking the Cat 2 honours. This weekend is a ladies and gents’ stableford competition sponsored by Texoil, Ballinrobe.

Ballyhaunis

Last weekend’s competition was a stableford sponsored by Corrib Oil with Fiona Prenty winning the ladies’ section by a point on a score of 36pts from Kay Fanning in second place. The gents’ competition was claimed by Tony Grennan with 46pts, Rory O’Connor was three points further back in second, with Anthony Cunnane taking third. During the month of October when you enter the weekend competition you will also have a chance of winning a free golfing holiday for you and three of your friends. To qualify you must score 25pts or more from your 10 best holes. Competition will finish after play on Sun October 30 .All winning cards will be entered into a draw that will be held at Galway Golf Club on Monday October 31.

Claremorris

Tom Burke was the winner of the MMH sponsored competition in Claremorris last weekend with a score of 44pts, Ger Noone claimed the Cat 1 prize on a score of 41pts. John Heaverty was the Cat 2 winner on 43pts, with Kevin McCarthy the Cat 3 winner.

Mulranny

Michael Joyce, with a fantastic score of 63 nett was the winner of the Kelly Butchers, Newport, Golfer of the year competition. Playing off eight, Joyce had a level par round. In second place was Michael Fallon with 68, the same score as Ger Staunton in third place. The gross was won by Alexis Loftus with a 79. This was the last round of the Golfer of the Year but it did not affect the overall result as Dwayne Flynn has been crowned golfer of the year as he had a commanding lead going into the final round.

Tom Mulloy was also celebrating his victory in the Autumn Cup match play singles. Mulloy defeated John McHugh on the 17th to clinch a noteworthy win. This Sunday’s stableford competition is sponsored by Allergan, Westport. The club outing takes place to Ballinrobe on Saturday week, October 15 and there are only a few places to be filled so contact Mary 086 1683894 if you are travelling.

Westport

The ladies’ winter league, first round, took place over the weekend. In a change from previous years, all six rounds will be played during October and November. Mary McNicholas, the Champion Lady Golfer was surprisingly defeated in the semi-final of the Maura Scott competition by Gretta Murphy last week.

With the greens keepers working on the greens this week, weather permitting, Murphy will have an extra few days to plan her assault on the final. The remaining gents’ matchplay final, the Phillip’s Cup was played on Saturday last with Owen Hughes coming out victorious. The draw sheet for the gents’ winter league is currently posted in the gents’ locker room.
