Extra gritters and ploughs have been ordered by Mayo County Council for this winter, members of the Roads and Transportation SPC were informed.
During the meeting on Monday, Iarla Moran, electrical engineer with the council, said that four additional ploughs and three road gritters will be delivered by November, all of which will assist in increasing the number of routes serviced for Mayo’s winter maintenance plan.
According to Mr Moran, there were 118 mobilisations from October 2010 to April 2011; down slightly from 131 the winter before. Last year 7,500 tonnes of salt was used and 20 treatment routes were covered — 400 kilometres of national primary roads and 650 kilometres of regional/local roads.
As for salt stocks, a new salt barn has been completed in Castlebar and barns are to be completed in Kilkelly and Claremorris.
SPC members welcomed the winter maintenance report.
