Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald will be in Castlebar today (Friday ) to officially open the Paper Tales exhibition by artist Maeve Clancy as part of the RoolaBoola Children’s Arts Festival.
The art exhibitions for RoolaBoola are aimed at young people, and have a reputation for being both inventive and engaging. And this, the 14th year of this family-friendly festival, is no exception with Paper Tales, a full-sized exhibition that is made entirely out of paper.
The Linenhall is presenting this really unusual and imaginative interactive installation by one of Ireland’s most exciting and original paper artists, Maeve Clancy, comprising giant pop-up books, projected animation, cut paper scenes and comics. And there is also a strong Mayo connection to the show. Maeve has taken her inspiration from actual stories and essays written by Castlebar school children in the 1930s - how they lived, worked and played, the local myths and legends of the time. The essays come from the archive of the Department of Folklore in UCD, which houses the National Folklore Commission’s original collection, a rich and fascinating resource of Irish traditional culture that is available online.
Paper Tales will be officially opened at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar at 7.30pm on Friday 30 September. All welcome. The exhibition runs until Monday 31 October.
