A woman, who while drunk stole a bottle of Buckfast Tonic Wine from a shop, was before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.
On September 20 2011 gardaí were called to Scriney’s, Lower Charles Street, Castlebar, after a bottle of €9.99 Buckfast was stolen. A description of the thief was given to gardaí, and gardaí located Megan Quinn, 32 Rathbawn Avenue, Castlebar, a short distance away. The defendant was intoxicated.
The 19-year-old unemployed woman has no previous convictions.
Quinn told the court that she did not know what she was doing as she had been drinking since Sunday.
Judge Mary Devins said that most 19-year-olds would not be drinking for two days solid and going to the shop to steal Buckfast. “The down and outs drink Buckfast... winos drink Buckfast... do you think that you are that low down in the gutter?” asked the judge.
The judge adjourned the case to December 7 for a probation report.
