A Ballinrobe man who stole eight cans of cider valued at €9.99 from Cummins’ super market in Ballinrobe was ordered to pay €5 to the shop owner this week in Claremorris District Court.
Edward Sweeney, 42 Abbey Street, pleaded guilty to stealing the cider. Garda John Coen told the court on September 19 this year he got a call to go to the supermarket at 5.40pm where Sweeney had been stopped by staff after he stole the cider, and after viewing the CCTV footage he arrested Sweeney.
Solicitor for Sweeney, Cathy McDarby, told the court her client had alcohol and depression problems and he had hit rock bottom with this incident, and he was due to take up a bed in an adult mental health institution this week. Judge Mary Devins said she would deal with the incident under the probation act if Sweeney paid €5 compensation to the owner of the supermarket. She also commented that she felt sorry for the supermarket owner as there seemed to be a lot of small thefts happening from his business.
