Calleary seeks Government support for Belleek Woods Project

Ballina TD Dara Calleary has called on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to look favourably upon a funding application from Belleek Woods Enhancement Committee, made under the Neighbourwood Scheme.

Deputy Calleary, who secured €96,000 in funding for the group last year, has called on Minister Simon Coveney to made a decision on the application without any further delay.

Dep Calleary said: “Last year I secured funding of €96,000 for Belleek Woods under the Neighbourwood Scheme, funding that was used to further enhance the fine facilities in Belleek with a particular emphasis on providing increased disability access to the woods.

“The hard-working committee have another application in this year and are awaiting approval. This week I questioned the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Simon Coveney about Belleek Woods Enhancement Committee’s application and was told that the application is being assessed.

“Now, I am calling on the Minister to a make a decision in relation to the matter so that work can commence on planting additional trees to enhance the Red Squirrel Project at Belleek,” he said.

“I wish to pay tribute to Cyril Collins and his Belleek Woods Enhancement Committee, to Mayo County Council, Ballina Town Council and Coillte for their continued support of Belleek Woods, and I encourage the people of Ballina and North Mayo to continue to use the facility,” concluded Dep Calleary.
