Representatives of Mayo Music Education Partnership and a group of talented musicians from Mayo attended the first National Music Generation Seminar in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra last week.
Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme.
Presentations were provided by representatives from Mayo, Sligo and Louth, the first three counties to receive seed funding as part Music Generation’s National Education Programme. Mayo has a rich musical tradition and participation in Music Generation will ensure that thousands of children and young people throughout County Mayo have access to music education and participation that they would not otherwise have had.
A representative of the Department of Education and Skills, Ann O’Mahony, ensured attendees that the Department was committed to sustaining the operations of Music Education Partnerships into the future, with Exchequer funding when the Music Generation donations cease.
Entertainment at the National Seminar was provided by a number of young artists. Music Generation Mayo was represented by The Rolling Waves – a group of 20 young musicians aged between 12 and 15 years under the guidance of music tutor John Kilkenny. The group showcased the excellent musical talent evident in the county as well as demonstrating how community involvement at a grassroots level can nurture such talent.
Music Generation Mayo/Mayo VEC will be recruiting a panel of tutors to roll out the tuition service across the county in due course. Music Generation Mayo will also have an online presence in the near future via a dedicated website whereby all information and progress will be available to the public.
