There is no stopping St Patrick’s Drama Group, Westport. The group will stage their next production Doubt from October 5 to 8, just four weeks after completing a hugely successful run with the hilarious comedy Widows Paradise, culminating in a two night run in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar.
Such is the strength of the group, they can now put on plays in relatively rapid succession whereas before their output was limited to two plays a year.
The play, written by John Patrick Shanley, won the 2005 Pulitzer prize for Drama, and has been performed worldwide by both professional and amateur groups. Doubt is a classic drama which explores the fine line between doubt and certainty and how life changing it can be for anyone accused of wrongdoing in the face of evidence that carries even the scintilla of doubt.
The play is set in the fictional St Nicholas Church School, in the Bronx, New York, in the autumn of 1964. The school’s principal, Sister Aloysius, a rigidly conservative nun vowed to the order of the Sisters of Charity, accuses the school pastor, Father Flynn, of improper conduct. She rejects his explanation of the circumstances surrounding the accusation and sets out to have him resign from his position.
St Patrick’s Drama Group production is directed by Fintan MacMahon and produced by Marion Moran. Paul O’Brien plays Father Flynn, Nuala Currid plays Sister Aloysius, Rosaleen Heraty plays the junior nun, Sister James, while Tracy Molloy plays Mrs Muller, the mother of one of the students.
The play will be staged at Scoil Phadraig, Altamount Street, Westport, for four performances, Wednesday, October 5 to Saturday, October 8 commencing at 8pm nightly. Parents should note that the play has a theme that may not be suitable for younger theatre goers. Tickets will go on sale on Monday September 26 at Westport Leisure Centre, off James Street, Westport. The ticket office at the Leisure Centre will be open from 3pm to 6pm daily.
