Erris woman dies in Turkish resort fall

A young north Mayo woman has fallen to her death in the Turkish holiday resort of Kusadasi.

Mary Linnane, a 21-year-old student nurse at Dublin City University, from Derrynameel, Barnatra, was on her first holiday abroad when the tragedy happened.

Ms Linnane was just two days into her summer break with a group of friends when she fell from an apartment building.

The second youngest in a family of six: five girls and one boy, the deceased has been described by neighbours as a lovely girl. Her parents, Martin, a former senior inter-county hurler with Galway, and Kathleen, along with other family members, are being comforted by friends and neighbours. The Erris community are said to be totally devastated by the tragedy.

Police in Turkey are investigating the tragedy and the Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the dead woman's family as well as liaising with her distressed holiday companions in Turkey.

Local county councillor Gerry Coyle said the community was heartbroken over the incident. “The Linnanes are deeply involved in the sporting and community life in Erris and are a very united and loving family,” he said. He added they have the support of the community, their neighbours and friends.
