A Polish man who told the district court in Ballyhaunis this week that he had saved up money to buy 26.56 grammes of cannabis which he used as pain relief for a knee injury had his sentencing adjourned for 12 months by Judge Mary Devins.
Mariuz Piotr Ubych pleaded guilty in court to the possession of the cannabis which was found by gardaí on March 31 2011 at his home at 76 The Maples, Ballyhaunis, following a search of the premises by the gardaí after they obtained a warrant following a tip off that there were drugs in the house.
Judge Mary Devins said that she found it unbelievable that Ubych, who the court was told received €134.76 per week in social welfare benefits, saved up the money. She also refused an application for legal aid and adjourned sentencing on Ubych for 12 months.
