Fine for man who ‘goes on the tear now and again’

A Manulla man was given a €50 fine in Castlebar District Court this week after he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place. Garda Martin Friel told the court that on October 29 2010 at 11.20pm on Linenhall Street, Castlebar, he saw Noel Cunnane, Barris, Manulla, Castlebar, walking down the street in a intoxicated state. Cunnane slipped off the footpath and on to the street and when he picked himself back up he collided with a wall on the opposite side of the footpath.

Garda Friel told the court that he arrested Cunnane, brought him to Castlebar Garda Station, and issued him with a fixed penalty notice, which he failed to pay.

Judge Mary Devins asked Cunnane if he had a drink problem, to which Cunnane responded, “No, but I just go on the tear every now and again. I was going to get a taxi home that night.” Judge Devins convicted and fined Cunnane €50.
