According to Kieran, in the last nine out of 10 years the most common method of entry for burglars was a window or door at the rear of a house. This year for the first time in a decade the most common method form of entry for burglars is via the front door. In addition to which, an alarming 85 per cent of all burglaries now take place while people are at home - up from 80 per cent.
A recent burglary report has revealed that for the fourth year in a row the most likely time of day to be burgled is between 12 noon and 4pm. This suggests that burglars are more audacious than ever and no longer strike under the cover of darkness. The most targeted day of the week in 2010 was Friday with Monday the least targeted day.
Out of Ireland’s 26 counties, Mayo ranks number 23 for burglaries, and the most burgled month is October. Galway city and county ranks number 3 for burglaries and the most burgled months are August and September, according to Kieran.
A burglary report has revealed that alarms are an excellent deterrent for burglars. In 2010, 78.68 per cent of houses burgled did not have an active alarm installed.
These findings indicate that burglars are becoming increasingly opportunistic and individuals are not adequately securing their property while they are in the home, thus increasing the risk of confrontation and personal danger.
