Brendan Hopkins, who was a director of Castlebar Credit Union for 18 years, died tragically in a car accident in 2002. As a mark of appreciation of his dedicated work and in order to perpetuate his memory, the board of directors approached his family and GMIT Castlebar with a view to setting up a scholarship scheme.
This scholarship is run in partnership with GMIT Castlebar Campus, and assists three students with costs associated with their studies. Annually, three students would be selected by a committee to receive a scholarship each of €1,500, along with being awarded the Brendan Hopkins/Castlebar Credit Union commissioned medal.
Applicants are invited to make submissions based on need, contribution to social and community development and achievement. Two scholarships are open to all students and one scholarship to students who have spent a minimum of two years at GMIT Castlebar and will progress to degree level in Castlebar.
Since the scholarship began nine years ago, it has helped 24 students cover the costs of their studies. Presentation takes place annually at the graduation ceremony. This year a further three students will benefit when the conferring ceremony takes place in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on November 5.
