Prepare for work course available in Mayo

An innovative new preparation for work training course will commence in Kiltimagh and Foxford on Monday September 5.

The Mayo North East LEADER Partnership Company has developed this new four-week long training course aimed at supporting people in rural areas who are not currently in paid employment.

The training course covers topics including confidence building, managing your finances and managing change, identifying your skills, and enterprise opportunities, as well as working with people to see where they can progress to, what employment opportunities are suitable for you, how to set up your business, and how to develop a good idea into a product, as well as individual support to identify what are the best progression routes to build a new career.

“The training courses are free to the people who take part as they are funded under the Rural Development Programme 2007 to 2013 which is part funded by the EU and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government,” said Monica O’Malley, CEO Mayo North East LEADER.

Siobhán Carroll-Webb, resource officer with Mayo North East, said: “Each course runs for five days a week for four weeks. The Kiltimagh course starts at 10am through to 1pm and the Foxford course runs from 2pm until 5pm. The courses are free and all materials needed are provided. This course does not interfere with any social welfare payments a person may be receiving. People who have completed this course in other areas across north and east Mayo have benefited hugely from it as it is a great source of information and support for those who attend. Progression rates from these preparation for work training programmes into employment and further education and training are very impressive.”
