Higgins calls for fair deal for the Irish in US

There are an estimated 50,000 Irish people currently residing undocumented in the US. “These people have no voice and often exist in low income under the radar employment,” Jim Higgins MEP said this week. “Despite their valuable contribution to the US exchequer they are considered criminals. These are decent hardworking people are do not deserve to be tarnished in this manner.”

The MEP said that he contacted US President Barack Obama “following the heartfelt welcome he received from the people of Ireland urging him to reform American immigration regulations in order to resolve the plight of the undocumented Irish. I impressed upon him the valuable contribution of the Irish in the US and the long established close working relationship between Ireland and the US. It is my hope that a favourable compromise can be found in order to give status to those who have long contributed to American society and whose contribution has not yet been recognised.”
