Irish charity Fighting Blindness seeks trekkers looking for a Latin adventure on a 10-day trek through the Sierra del Escambray in central Cuba. The charity trek from November 18 to 27, begins with a night in Havana and continues at a moderate pace through the mountains to the charming city of Trinidad.
The Fighting Blindness Cuba Trek is appropriate for people with a moderate fitness level and is open to people with visual impairments and their guides.
During the trip, participants will enjoy Cuban life, catching a rare glimpse of rural coffee and banana plantations. The trek begins in Cuba’s capital, Havana, and continues through the Sierra del Escambray mountains. The long days of trekking will be rewarded with a lush tropical landscape and the famed Cuban hospitality during overnight stays in haciendas, hotels and tents under the stars.
The trek ends in the colonial town of Trinidad where participants will celebrate their success by enjoying mojitos under the strains of authentic Cuban salsa music.
Proceeds from the trek help Fighting Blindness continue to fund world-leading research into treatments and cures for blindness. Some 80,000 people in Ireland have degenerative conditions causing sight loss and Fighting Blindness needs continued support to reach its annual fundraising target of €2.5 million.
The registration fee for the trek is €335 and the minimum fundraising target is €3,200. Fighting Blindness staff can help trekkers organise fundraising events and training schedules. Trekkers looking for a more rigorous challenge can also sign up for the Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro treks. For more information email [email protected]
