With just two games to go in this year’s Elverys Super League, Castlebar Celtic will edge ever closer to regaining the title with a win over Iorras Aontaithe in Celtic Park on Saturday evening. Declan Kilkelly’s side are three points clear of nearest challengers Claremorris with only two rounds left in the competition. Celtic also have a far superior goal difference to their south Mayo rivals with +21 in the bank as opposed to +11 for Michael Hutton’s team.
A win for Celtic combined with a win by Westport United over Claremorris in the Sportspark in Westport would seal the title for Celtic before the final day’s action and see Westport leapfrog Claremorris who have had an outstanding season after only getting promoted into second place in the table before the final round of games.
While Celtic will rightfully take the plaudits at the end of the year for their strong run towards the title where they have yet to lose a game in the league, having won eight and drawn four of their 12 games, a lot of praise must also be given to Claremorris who have pushed them all the way this season.
Most observers would have expected that Ballina Town and Westport United would be their closest rivals in the run in, but both sides are now under new management regimes this season and will surely be back fighting hard for the title next year after both management and players have fully settled into their roles.
Swinford and Ballinrobe Town will be making the drop to Premier One next summer where they will replace Fahy Rovers who have promotion wrapped up already and are only a win away from sealing the title over the next two rounds of action. Rovers’ opponents on Sunday are Straide and Foxford United who are battling to head back up with Fahy after both sides were relegated last season. But they are being pushed all the way by Clew Bay United, and they will be doing their utmost on Sunday to have Fahy put the champagne on ice for another round of games and pick up three points which will go a long way in their push to make it back up to the top level next season.
Ballina Town celebrate fifty years
Ballina Town are celebrating 50 years as a club this year and next Tuesday night in the club house they are holding a meeting to organise celebrations for this major milestone in the club’s history. The meeting will take place at 8pm and all current and past club members are asked to attend.
