Ultan Molloy, MPSI, HealthWest Community Pharmacy, this week discusses how to deal with IBS.
Irritable bowel syndrome can affect up to 50 per cent of some populations. Symptoms include chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and changes in bowel habits (without an obvious cause ), eg, diarrhoea and constipation. IBS can be distressing for those of you who suffer from IBS and it can result in chronic pain and fatigue, among other symptoms.
IBS can be triggered by certain foods in your diet, infection, stress, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators. It is important of course to consult with your GP if you are experiencing ongoing issues such as those listed above to rule out any potentially more serious issues.
Dietary changes, medication, and psychological intervention can all help to relieve symptoms of IBS.
Food intolerance testing will help identify problem foods. This test involves a finger prick blood sample and a follow-up consultation to advise you on dietary changes. Increasing your fibre intake and taking certain probiotic supplements may also be appropriate.
Certain medications (over the counter and on prescription ) are known to be beneficial. Ask your pharmacist or GP about your potential treatment options.
Reducing your stress levels, exercising regularly, maintaining a good work-life balance, and psychological strategies such as cognitive behavioural therapy have all been shown to be beneficial.
