Castlebar author publishes her first novel

Nancy Carney, who lives in Rockland, Castlebar, is about to celebrate the publication of her first novel Farewell Philadelphia.

The novel is based on a true story set in 1924, when the heroine Catherine Brennan sets sail from Cobh bound for Philadelphia at the age of 22 to make her fortune. Catherine return to the west of Ireland six years later to seek a husband through a matchmaker.

The story tells the ups and downs of rearing a large family through the 50 years of marriage and at 65 years of age Alzheimer’s disease has taken over the heroine’s life, leaving it difficult for her grand-daughter to extract her life story.

Nancy will have a book signing in Julians, Midfield, on August 27 where you will be able to purchase the book. The official launch will take place on November 11 in the Linenhall Arts Centre.
