The Full Irish coms to a conclusion
The Full Irish series of traditional concerts at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar comes to a close on Thursday August 25 at 8pm with a star line-up of Emer Mayock, piper Mick O’Brien, and fiddle player Aoife Ní Bhriain.
Emer Mayock is an internationally renowned musician and composer from Mayo. A multi-instrumentalist, she has produced two albums, Merry Bits of Timber and Playground. Mick O’Brien was born in Dublin, and started playing the pipes at the tender age of nine. Since then he has performed with the likes of The Dubliners, Frankie Gavin, and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Joining them on stage is Mick’s daughter Aoife Ní Bhriain, an amazing fiddle player who recently won the Seán Ó Riada Traditional Fiddle competition. This talented trio have joined forces to explore the wealth of music contained in the Goodman Manuscripts, a treasure trove of Munster melodies collected in the 1880s, and bringing the collection into an exciting 21st century context.
Achill artists groups’ exhibition opens
A large crowd attended the opening of Aurelia - The Achill artists’ group exhibition at Dooagh Achill Island a few weeks ago. The exhibition is open until this Sunday August 21.
This is an extensive exhibition of new works by Ronan Halpin, Mary Lavelle Burke, John McHugh, Amanda McMahon, Margo McNulty, Margaret Morrisson, Camile Souter, Joe Wilson, Frances van Miele, and Antic Ham. These artists are working on Achill Island, developing a varied body of works which refer to the island’s history, culture, community and environment as source material. The Achill artists’ group is a collective of visual artists based on Achill, who have organised a series of six group exhibitions over 12 years, - the last one took place in 2009 - each containing new works in sculpture, painting, printmaking, and video.
Lots to see and do at the Museum of Country Life
On Saturday between 3pm and 5pm pick up your instruments and drop into the music circle in the museum. Practice, share, and play some tunes with teacher Julie Langan. No booking is required for this event.
Next Thursday the museum will host a painting with watercolours drop-in event between 2pm and 4pm. Artist Sinead Wall will be on hand to guide you through the steps of creating your own watercolours.
Betty Gannon exhibition at the Custom House
Custom House Studios at Westport Quay is hosting an exhibition of new works by Betty Gannon which runs until August 28. The exhibition is entitled Fray and Fragment. The artist is interested in the inevitable process of entropy - of things breaking down or wearing out. A change takes place, something is replaced, repaired, or just abandoned, and in that process our attention is drawn to the physical impressions of use that we leave behind.
Exposed to the elements and human activity, our surroundings bear the marks of decay and use.
Chasing Shadows exhibition at the Linenhall
This coming week is the last chance to see Chasing Shadows, a fascinating exhibition of black-and-white photographs at the Linenhall Arts Centre by Dublin musician and photographer Danny Diamond that celebrates Irish traditional music “in its continual evolution and flux”.
Diamond has exhibited in Ireland and in the United States. This is his third solo exhibition, and is presented as part of The Full Irish traditional series at the Linenhall Arts Centre.
