Learn about Mayo place names

The next Westport Civic Trust talk will examine place-name history in the county, ranging from rare pre-Gaelic survivals to parish and townland names and to the more recent so-called minor names which survive especially in coastal Gaeltacht and island communities.

Dr Fiachra Mac Gabhann of NUI Galway will explore the various layers of place-name history in the county. Fiachra has published widely in this field and is currently researching all 3,204 Mayo townland names.

This talk will be at the Atlantic Coast Hotel on Thursday November 20 at 8pm, and all are welcome. The talk is free to members and €5 for non-members. More details are available from Pip Murphy on 098 50202.
