Mayo Government TD John O’Mahony is backing the call from Young Fine Gael to hold the forthcoming presidential election on a Friday, rather than the selected date of Thursday October 27.
Deputy O’Mahony said it was his belief that by holding the election on a Thursday, many people living away from their homes during the week will not be in a position to vote. “Think of all the Mayo people working and studying away from Mayo between Monday and Friday,” he said. “It will be extremely difficult for those people to get home to vote in such an important election. We haven’t had a presidential election for so long now, and for many people it will be the first time they will be eligible to vote in such an election. However, if it’s held on a Thursday, many people will be disenfranchised.”
