O’Mahony calls for increased space on Westport trains for bicycles

Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has said that he intends to make representations to Iarnród Éireann to request the company to consider increasing the number of spaces available to passengers to carry their bicycles with them on their journey.

Deputy O’Mahony said the design of the modern trains does not allow for the same volume of bicycles to be carried as in the older trains. “This is an issue that really needs to be addressed quickly,” he added. “We are promoting the Great Western Greenway and it’s a vital part of our tourism infrastructure but for people using the trains to transport their bikes, getting there is a problem.

“As things stand only a very small number of bikes can be carried on a train but with the numbers of people using the Greenway increasing all the time, Iarnród Éireann need to examine their policy and consider providing access to more cyclists. I intend to contact the company with a view to improving the lot of cyclists using the train service.”
