Come along and join in all the fun on this year’s Westport Heritage Day, Lá Oidhreachta Chathair na Mart, and take a look back in time on life in Ireland fadó. On Sunday August 7 from 12 noon to 5pm The Mall will come alive. Food and craft producers will be selling their wares and a mix of spinners, butter makers, wood turners, potters, a tin maker, basket makers, and jewellery makers will show how things were done generations before the iPod.
Local artists will be taking to the stage from 12 noon onwards. For those of you who have never danced a step before, this is your chance to learn, as local dancers will be giving dancing workshops before the big céilí sráide begins with the Matt Cunningham Band at 2pm. Tóg leat do bhróga damhsa and join in on the Sean Nós Dancing and Rince Seit. Enjoy a special appearance by the Strawboys.
Beidh Cumann Staire Chathair na Mart ag eagrú Turais Stairiúla Threoraithe ar feadh an lae chun léargas éagsúil a thaispeáint de Chathair na Mart. Tosóidh siad ar 2in, 3in, agus 4in. Fágfaidh siad ó sheastán an Chumainn Staire ar an Meal Theas.
Tar chuig “An Fairgreen” le taispeántas ollmhór de Charranna den Seanré, gluaisrothair Honda 50, súisteálaithe agus tarracóirí agus mion-iarnróid a fheiceáil. Is cinnte go mbainfidh gach aon duine sult as an lá seo i gCathair na Mart. Beidh ainmhithe feirme traidisiúnta ann chomh maith le taispeántas d’ainmhithe níos neamhchoitianta a mhaireann in Éirinn sa lá atá inniu ann.
Beidh an lá lán le gníomhaíochtaí, go leor dóibh trí Ghaeilge, agus cead isteach saor in aisce. Mar sin, ná cailligí lá iontach don teaghlach ar fad. Beidh siamsaíocht ann do leanaí lena n-áirítear Seónna Seanchais Idirghníomhacha faoi Chú Chulainn agus Gráinne Mhaol, amhránaíocht, léamha filíochta, drámaí agus puipéadóireacht.

There will be two competitions on the day: a traditional music busking competition with first, second and third prizes of €75, €50, €25. So for all you musicians and aspiring performers out there, bring along your bosca ceoil and get the streets of Westport dancing again.
There will be a Best Heritage Dressed Competition with a fantastic prize of an annual pass to Westport House for two adults and up to four children. Register at the registration marquee from 11am on the day. Announcements of winners will be before 5pm. All attending are encouraged to dress up in heritage style to add to the atmosphere of the day.
