Live Register figures jump in the west

The latest statistics from the CSO show that there was an increase of 1,164 people living in the west signing on the Live Register in July.

The figures illustrate unemployment in Mayo, Roscommon, Galway city, and Galway county with a total of 43,560 unemployed in these areas in July 2011; an increase from 42,396 in June 2011. In comparison to last year, the figure is up from 43,492 in July 2010.

Breaking down these statistics, 8,200 of those signing on in July were under 25 with the remaining being over 25. More men (27,090 ) then women (16,470 ) are unemployed in the west, however the number of women signing on last month increased by 1,089 compared to those on the Live Register in June.

A break-down of unemployment rates in Mayo areas will be released next week.

Nationally the standardised unemployment rate for July was 14.3 per cent, slightly up on 14.2 per cent in June.
