Cat rescue photo competition

The Mayo Cat Rescue Pet Photo Competition closing date has been extended to September 16. The prize this year for the winning photo is €150.

The winner and five runner up photos will feature as Christmas cards in aid of Mayo Cat Rescue for 2011.

Each photo must be accompanied by €5 entry fee. Entrants must enclose an SAE for return of photos.

Widows’ Group

The next meeting of the Widows’ Group will be held on Monday August 8 at 8pm in the Mayo North East office, Charlestown.

Church gate collection in Newport

A Church gate collection will take place at St Patrick’s Church in Newport on Saturday and Sunday August 6 and 7, to raise funds for Vita’s Ethiopian Spud Appeal. Funds raised from this collection will provide potato seeds, tools, and training to empower families in southern Ethiopia to grow food for life.

Monster bingo

The Erris branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association will hold a monster bingo night on Sunday August 7, commencing at 7.30pm, in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel, Belmullet.

There will be €3,000 in prize money, and a raffle will be held on the night with a hamper as a prize.

Westport Civic Trust

The annual outing is being arranged this year for September 17. It will be to Athenry to look at the restored castle, the walls and abbey, with a local guide. The coach will then visit the Aughrim battle site interpretative centre and later Loughrea to view the cathedral.

Lunch will be at Ballingarry Park, an elegant small Georgian house owned by Mr and Mrs George Gossip, who will talk about the history of the house and its restoration. It is hoped to fit in one or two other sights to the day as well.

Write an Ode to the Third Sunday in September

SuperValu is asking you to pen an Ode to the Third Sunday in September—All-Ireland Final day.

The overall winning ode will appear in the All-Ireland match programme and feature in SuperValu’s print advertising for the final. Not only that, but it will be read by Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh from the big screen at half time during the All-Ireland football final.

The ode should be a maximum of 120 words or no longer than 90 seconds in length when read aloud, or to make it simple five verses made up of two lines each. Once you are happy with your rhyme, submit it by logging onto www.SuperValu.ie, where you will also find the full terms and conditions for the competition.

Raise funds for CF

ARAMARK Healthcare, a division of ARAMARK Ireland, is calling on people across Mayo to help raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland by joining the Swinford Fun Run. The 5k walk/run takes place on the evening of Wednesday August 10.

Registration will take place at 7pm on the day at Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre. Entry is €5 with all money collected from the registration on the night going to CF Ireland.
