Bouncers assaulted in Ballinrobe after man was refused entry to nightclub

Two doormen who work at the Valkenburg nightclub in Ballinrobe were assaulted after an intoxicated man was refused entry to the premises.

Chris Harness, 26 Gort na gCloch, Ballinrobe pleaded guilty to the section two assaults on Mr Wayne Henaghan and Mr John Flannery at Ballinrobe District Court on Tuesday.

Gardaí were called to the scene on January 21 this year after the assaults occurred and the defendant, who had calmed down by the time the gardaí arrived, was brought home in the garda patrol car.

Solicitor for the defendant Michael McDarby, said that his client, who is an unemployed, single 31-year-old, is now attending addiction counselling for his drinking and said that Harness’s actions on that night were “totally unacceptable behaviour”.

Harness, who has previous convictions, was convicted and fined €750 by Judge Mary Devins and also ordered to pay Mr Flannery €750 as well as being sentenced to three months in prison which was suspended for 12 months. In relation to the second assault on Mr Henaghan, Harness was convicted and fined €500, ordered to pay €500 to the injured party and sentenced to two months in prison consecutive, which was also suspended for 12 months.
