Claremorris is in line for a civic amenity centre where the public can bring recyclable goods but not domestic waste.
There are already two such sites in Mayo, one at Derrinumera in Newport and one at Rathroen, Ballina, and under the Connacht Waste Management Plan Claremorris has been designated as a suitable location for a third site.
The news was welcomed by the Claremorris electoral area committee this week but they urged caution, asking that CCTV cameras would be installed to prevent illegal dumping.
Mr Patsy Burke, senior executive officer, confirmed that the site would be run “properly and professionally”.
