Castlebar was saddened during the week when the death was announced of popular Castlebar man John Cunningham, Breaffy Road, Castlebar. Mr Cunningham was a leading figure in the Order of Malta in the town for the past four decades and held the position of officer in charge as well as the captain of the Castlebar unit.
Cunningham, a native of County Galway, had lived in Castlebar for over four decades. He was on the staff of Mayo County Council, he had also been heavily involved in organising a number trips to Lourdes for the sick and disabled. He is survived by his wife Mary, three sons and a daughter. His remains reposed at the family home until Wednesday evening when they were brought to the Church of the Holy Rosary and he was buried in Breaffy cemetery following the funeral Mass.
