Lithuanian man who told gardaí to 'f**K off' told court he couldn't speak English

A Lithuanian man who was arrested by Gardai for pubic order offences and told Gardai to “f**k off” and that he would “not go to Garda station” and then said he couldn’t speak English in court was given a three month prison sentence in Claremorris District Court this week.

Mindaugas Ivoska, 83 Bother Duff, Claremorris who represented himself in court, said that he couldn’t speak English, however the prosecuting Garda told the court that he could and he had spoken English when he was arrested.

Garda Grainne McLoone told the court that she got a call to go to an incident where a man was beating up his wife on the Ballyhaunis Road in Claremorris at 9.30pm on June 23 2011. She went on to say that when she arrived she saw Mindaugas Ivoska who was known to her shouting and roaring at his wife and that he was falling all over the place and she could get a smell of drink off him. Ivoska became abusive towards the Gardai who attended the scene and Garda McLoone told the court that he told her to “f**k off” and that he “would not go to Garda station” when he was arrested. The court was also told that Ivoska had 12 previous convictions. For threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour in a public place Judge Mary Devins sentenced Ivoska to three months in prison and fined him €300. For being intoxicated in a public place she convicted and fined him €120.
