Woman brandished knife in family row

A woman who brandished a butter knife in the middle of a housing estate was before Castlebar District Court this week.

Gardaí were called to a disturbance at Hollow Grove on August 27 2010. When gardaí arrived, the scene was quiet, however a complaint was made by Martin McDonagh, that Ellen McDonagh, 8 Hollow Grove, Castlebar (his sister-in-law ), was in possession of a knife. The defendant admitted she had held a knife in her hand and CCTV caught the incident.

The court heard that there has been friction between two families in the area and on the day, while the defendant was making sandwiches, her son ran in to tell her there was trouble outside. McDonagh then ran out, still with the butter knife in her hand.

The 42-year-old woman has six previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins adjourned sentencing to July 18 2012.
