O’Mahony calls on Minister to urgently address appeal waiting times

Mayo Government TD, John O’Mahony has discovered that it can take up to 14 months for appeals to be processed by the Department of Social Protection. Now, Deputy O’Mahony, is calling on the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, TD, to redeploy staff to the department to speed up the process.

“Fourteen months is an awful long time for someone to have to wait to discover if there appeal has been successful. It is understandable that the department has increased significantly in the past two years and because of that surge I believe it is vital that extra is taken to deal with the demand. Staff could be re-deployed from other areas which may not be quite as busy on a short term arrangement to help reduce the waiting time,” he said.
