Castlebar Town Council are preparing to publish new draft parking bye laws to go hand in hand with the rejuvenation works in the middle of the town. As part of the draft, the parking for taxis on Main Street in the town will be reduced to three spaces during the day on the east side of the street beside Parsons shops with extra spaces becoming taxi spaces in the evening time.
Cllr Blackie Gavin raised the issue of one local resident on the street who lives where the taxi rank spaces are and the difficulty that they have at times in relation to parking where the taxi rank will be located. There was a general welcome from the majority of councillors towards the plans going out for public submissions to be received on them.
Barrett calls for Castlebar to become a heritage town
Labour Party Cllr Harry Barrett called on Castlebar to become a heritage town and market it self as such. “We see plaques missing, murals faded and no proper signage of the history of our town. Our town is rich in history and heritage and we have to do something about it. We haven’t celebrated it and we must start to do that.” Cllr Barrett’s idea was praised by the other members of the council who rowed in behind it with full support. Sinn Féin Cllr Therese Ruane told the meeting that, “this is something that we have to prioritise right away.” While Independent Cllr Frank Durcan said “over the years we have lost a lot of plaques and monuments and had some sites built on. This idea has 100 per cent of my support and I have a lot of information on the history of the town and I will give as much help as I can to get this off the ground”
Council carries motion askingTaoiseach to commit to Mayo General
A notice of motion by Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne which supported the people of Roscommon in their efforts to maintain services at the hospital there and calling on An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to give a commitment in writing that the current level of services in Mayo General Hospital, was passed by Castlebar Town Council. Cllr Kilcoyne’s motion received the backing of himself, Cllr Therese Ruane, Cllr Frank Durcan, Cllr Blackie Gavin and Cllr Harry Barrett. The motion was passed by five votes to four with the four votes opposing the motions coming from the four Fine Gael members of the council.
