The Elverys Sports Super League will enter its final four game stretch this weekend with Castlebar Celtic looking to stay the course to the title over the last handful of games. Declan Kilkelly’s side are currently five points in front of second placed Claremorris, they kept the gap open thanks to coming out on the right side of an odd goal in seven encounter with bottom of the table Ballinrobe Town last weekend in Celtic Park. Celtic raced into a two goal lead early on only to be hit for three in a row by Ballinrobe, before goals from Stevie Gavin and Ger O’Boyle saw them win through at the end. On Sunday, Celtic will make the short hop to the Sportspark to take on Westport United at 2.30pm.
The Covies are six points behind Celtic at the minute in third place in the table and win for them would cut the gap back to three points and make the run into the end of the league a very exciting one. Westport come into the game on the back of a 4-0 win over Manulla in Carramore last time out. The bagged the three points thanks to four second half goals in a 21 minute spell to see off their hosts, with David Hoban and Vinny O’Malley bagging a brace each.
Claremorris who are currently sitting in second place in the league will be looking to take advantage of any slip up by Celtic when they travel to The Green to take on Ballinrobe Town in their game this weekend. Claremorris saw off last year’s champions Ballina Town at home in Concannon Park last time out thanks to goals from Brian Gallagher and Kevin Costello and an impressive performance in goal from Alvin McCallig. Claremorris will go into the game as favourites, but Ballinrobe Town’s performance last week showed there is a lot fight still left in the bottom-placed side. Ballina Town will host Iorras Aontaithe in the north Mayo derby in Belleek in which a win is a must to keep them in the title chase. The final game of the Super League is the meeting of Swinford and Manulla. Swinford are currently occupying the final relegation place with Manulla one place and four points in front of them. If Swinford many to overturn their visitors on Sunday the battle to beat the drop will intensify even more amongst the two sides over the final three games.
Fahy and S & F in poll position for promotion
In the Premier A League, both Fahy Rovers and Straide and Foxford United occupy the two promotion spots with Rovers leading the championship by two points. On Saturday evening Fahy will look to keep their lead over the rest of the pack when they face a tricky tie away to third placed Clew Bay United. Straide and Foxford United will host Conn Rangers in another tough game as they try to keep up their march back to the top division. At the bottom of the table, both Westport United B and Snugboro United are in the two relegation spots and both sides will meet in Conway Park on Saturday night. A win for Snugboro United would see them move four points clear of Westport United B and depending on how Ballyheane fair a home to Killala maybe out of the relegation zone an into safety.
The latest of the divisional cup finals will see Partry Athletic and Bangor Hibs tussle it out for the Tonra Cup on Sunday in Milebush at 3pm. Both sides have had very contrasting seasons in the league so far with Bangor looking to complete the first part of a cup and league title double on Sunday with Partry Athletic sitting second bottom in a battle for their survival in the Premier B League.
