The Connacht council promoted Ted Webb Connacht under-16 football tournament eagerly awaited by all involved in underage football in the province gets underway this coming Saturday in Tuam and Castlebar on a blitz system. Roscommon are the reigning champions having captured the crown in Ballyhaunis last August Bank holiday. This highly valued event is considered by many football pundits as a key indicator to the possible contenders for minor honours in the intervening two years,
Connacht GAA provincial games manager and former Galway star John Tobin has prior to competition wished all players and mentors the very best in this weekend’s action. “For many of the 150 players who will be facing into adult football in the coming years for club, college and county it is a perfect platform to showcase their skills. All who are on show this weekend in Tuam and Castlebar will have come through the development squad systems that are now firmly established in each county under the tutelage of qualified motivated coaches”. Tobin went on to add that “Many in action this weekend will be the senior stars of their counties in the next half decade at minor, under and finally senior level”.
The games manager concluded by encouraging “football followers from each region to make the short journey to Tuam and Castlebar to see the stars and coaches of the future in action” The winners of each venue will contest the Ted Webb cup final in Ballyhaunis on August 1st as the second placed team in each venue will battle it out for the shield also on Ballyhaunis.
In Castlebar Mayo North West, Sligo, Galway City-West and Leitrim will all be in action with the games starting at 12pm. In Tuam Stadium, Mayo South-East, Roscommon and Galway will be in action with the first game also starting at 12pm.
