Ballyhaunis man given chance following drug possession

Judge Mary Devins gave a 23-year-old Ballyhaunis man who pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and cannabis a chance by not recording a conviction against him, instead giving him the benefit of the Probation Act.

The court was told that Garda Sinead Caheny received confidential information that there were drugs at the home of Shane MacMahon at 3 Devlis Court, Ballyhaunis and she obtained a search warrant. On October 29, 2010 she searched his home and found 48.85 grams of cannabis worth €340 and .61 grams of cocaine worth €42.70. The drugs were hidden in a Playstation game box in the house. The court was told that MacMahon moved to Ballyhaunis to live with his mother in June 2010 and hadn’t come to the attention of the Gardaí in the town before this incident or after; he also told the gardaí that the drugs were for his use only. Judge Mary Devins ordered MacMahon to pay €250 to Cancer Care West in relation to the cocaine charge and took the cannabis charge into consideration.
