When Judge Mary Devins was told that a defendant who had been in Ireland for the past seven years and was working could not speak English she told him in Ballyhaunis District Court: “This is literally ridiculous, you say that you’re here seven years and you can’t speak either English or Irish. That is ridiculous, I don’t believe you.”
Peter Ferencz, 7 The Hazelwood, Ballyhaunis pleaded guilty to driving a car without insurance and tax. Garda Brendan Flaherty told the court that he stopped Ferencz at Upper Main Street, Ballyhaunis at 5.50pm on March 5 this year and he saw that the car was out of tax for a very long time. He asked Ferencz to produce his insurance inside of 10 days, which Ferencz failed to do.
Judge Devins convicted and fined Ferencz €600 for driving without insurance and disqualified him from driving for two years and fined him €300 for driving a car without tax.
