Man home to visit sick mother convicted of drink driving

A man who, while on holidays in Ballina drove drunk, was this week disqualified from driving for two years.

Thomas Diamond, Ardoughan, Ballina was stopped by gardaí on June 17 2011 at Kilmoremoy, Killala Road at 10.26pm after he drove towards gardaí with no lights on in his car.

The defendant provided a breath sample which gave a reading of 47mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Diamond told the court that he works in the UK as a crane driver and was home to visit his sick mother. That night the defendant said that he had a couple of drinks and then went to the shop before he was stopped.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €600 and he was disqualified from driving for two years. A careless driving charge was taken into consideration.
