Crotty and O’Donnell exhibition in Castlebar

Next Friday July 1 sees the opening of Remnant, a joint exhibition of paintings and mixed media work by Aidan Crotty and Conor O’Donnell at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar.

Artists Conor O’Donnell and Aidan Crotty met during a residency in Kerry in 2009. Both fine art graduates of Crawford College in Cork, they share some common threads in their subject matter but differ in their approach toward painting processes and practice.

Sound + Vision comes back to Ballina

Once again Sound + Vision, Ballina’s Film Festival, aims to celebrate music in film with a programme of film screenings and dance. This year the programme will focus on the golden era of hip-hop on film with a selection of classic titles from the eighties. The programme includes Dance Theatre of Ireland’s Block Party, a spectacular production rooted in the hip-hop tradition. The festival will take place from July 4 to 9.

Sabina MacMahon exhibition opens next week in Ballina Arts Centre

An exhibition of new work by Sabina MacMahon that investigates the lives of biblical characters, historical figures and saints in a series of photographs and other objects that have been appropriated and altered to create visual dilemmas based on traditional representations. The exhibition is called Soft Murder; appropriate to a sad, frightened time and will be officially opened next Thursday July 7 at 8pm. The title of the exhibition is taken from Susan Sontag’s 1973 essay. Admission is free and it will run until July 30.

A feast of trad at the Linenhall this summer

Hungry for top quality music this summer? Then look no further than The Full Irish, a feast of traditional music taking place in Castlebar’s Linenhall Arts Centre. From July 20 to August 25, The Full Irish will be offering a series of concerts showcasing some of the very best of Irish traditional music and musicians in the Linenhall’s intimate performance space.

And there is plenty on the menu, with a top-drawer line-up including Emer Mayock, Tommy Keane, Harry Bradley, Mick O’Brien, Laoise Kelly and sean nós dancer Seosamh Ó Neachtain among the roll call of luminaries, presenting music from Belfast to Waterford and Dublin to Belmullet, from the 1880s Goodman Manuscripts to contemporary Trad, and from exciting young musicians to respected veterans. Accompanying the series is Chasing Shadows, a fascinating exhibition of black-and-white photographs by musician and photographer Danny Diamond that celebrates Irish traditional music “in its continual evolution and flux”.

The Full Irish concert series kicks off with musician’s musician and fiddle and banjo virtuoso John Carty, who will be playing up a storm with guitarist par excellence Arty McGlynn at on Wednesday July 20 at 8pm.

Following on, there’s a night of trad with an Erris flavour, when one of Mayo’s best-loved musicians, accordionist and singer Joe Carey joins Séamus Ó Mongáin (concertina ) and Liam McGonigle (accordion, melodeon ) for some real Mayo magic on Wednesday, July 27.

Highly respected Belfast flute-player Harry Bradley and legendary Waterford piper Tommy Keane perform with internationally acclaimed sean nós dancer Seosamh Ó Neachtain on Thursday August 4 for an evening guaranteed to delight. With many more shows lined up in the weeks after.

All concerts take place at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Linenhall Street, Castlebar.
