Courses in counselling available in Castlebar

Castlebar Counselling and Therapy Centre is currently offering a number of courses for those who would like to explore a new profession.

A one-year foundation course in psychotherapy/counselling will be run on Tuesday evenings from October, and a four year professional diploma course in psychotherapy/counselling will commence in January 2012. The latter is fully accredited by The Irish Council for Psychotherapy as well as The Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Graduates are awarded the Diploma of The Dublin Counselling and Therapy Centre and its graduates work in private practice throughout the west, as well as in The National Counselling Service and for a variety of voluntary organisations in the area.

The centre, which is a registered charity, also offers low-cost counselling for clients and provides a safe and caring therapeutic environment for those in need.

Those who are interested in pursuing a new career in psychotherapy/counselling, but are unsure of the commitment involved, will find that the foundation course offers the opportunity to learn valuable counselling skills as well as providing a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental theories and practice of psychotherapy/counselling.

The four year part-time diploma course is designed to support the professional and personal development of the students throughout their training and to prepare them to work with a wide variety of client groups and issues. It provides a broad-based training in subjects such as counselling skills and life-span development, as well as offering leading-edge therapies in fields such as shock and trauma, relationships, abuse, bereavement, addictions and group work. It comprises both academic and experientially-based learning methods and trainees are provided with clients under supervision.

The centre also offers a variety of continuous professional development days throughout the year for accredited psychotherapists and related professions.
