More men in Mayo, however women flocked to the county

The population of Mayo has increased by 5.4 (6,713 ) per cent since 2006, with 130,552 living in the county in 2011 in comparison to 123,839 in 2006. This population increase is in line with national figures which show that Ireland’s population is now 4,581,269; the highest level in 150 years.

The first results from Census 2011, which was taken in April, show that there are more men living in Mayo (65,303 ) than women (65,249 ).

Two thousand one hundred and thirty seven women have migrated to the county in the last four years, while 850 men have moved to Mayo. This 4.7 per cent increase in the migration figure has however dropped from the last census rate of 9.6 per cent.

County wide there are 16,387 vacant dwellings in 2011 out of a housing stock of 66,068. Housing stock in 2006 was 58,717, with 14,298 vacant dwellings in the same period.
