Newstalk 106-108fm will host a live broadcast and family fun day at Breaffy GAA club ahead of the clash between Mayo and Galway in the Connacht Football Championship semi-final today (Friday ), June 24.
Newstalk’s Lunchtime show will broadcast live from Breaffy GAA as part of the station’s extensive coverage of the 2011 GAA All-Ireland Senior Championships. Lunchtime presenter Jonathan Healy will be broadcasting live from 12 noon. Former Armagh footballer Oisin McConville will be on hand giving a coaching session to the under 12s.
This is the first time in history that a station outside the State-run broadcaster has been awarded exclusive national radio commentary rights for the GAA All-Ireland Senior Championships. Newstalk has been awarded exclusive live broadcasting rights for 21 games including the Ulster and Leinster football finals, the Leinster hurling final and two All-Ireland football quarter finals.
“We are delighted to be broadcasting live from Breaffy GAA in the build up to the Galway battle,” said Newstalk station editor Garrett Harte. “I have no doubt that the passionate Breaffy GAA fans will turn out in force to create an electric atmosphere for the live show. For the first time since the foundation of the State, alternative live national commentary will exist on championship weekends. This is a humbling and exciting challenge for Newstalk and we are delighted to have been awarded the championship broadcasting rights.”
