“Fine Gael are the law and order party and I want them to show it in the county council,” Independent Castlebar town and county councillor Michael Kilcoyne said this week. Kilcoyne’s remarks related to the new draft anti-social behaviour strategy that was approved by Castlebar Town Council this week.
The issue of Mayo County Council paying the rent under the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS ) of tenants who reside inside the functional area of Castlebar Town Council and the fact that they will not have to comply with the anti-social behaviour policy of the town council, unlike those accommodated by the town council caused debate at the town council’s special meeting this week.
“I will be putting a motion to the county council that they put into all contracts in future that tenants have to comply with the anti-social behaviour strategy of the town council if the accommodation is inside the functional area of the town council as opposed to the county council,” Cllr Kilcoyne told the Mayo Advertiser this week. “Fine Gael are the law and order party and I want them to show it. They control the county council and when their own anti-social behaviour strategy comes up, I want to see them pass that motion.”
Cllr Kilcoyne had initially looked to have it included in the town council’s strategy, but was told by town clerk Marie Crowley that those tenants were under the control of Mayo County Council not Castlebar Town Council and the town council has no authority over them as they were not their tenants.
