Westport mourns passing of former TD and senator

The community of Westport and beyond were shocked on Wednesday to learn of the sudden passing of former county councillor, TD, and senator Myles Staunton (75 ).

Mr Staunton was a well known businessman and an extremely popular member of the Fine Gael party in Mayo who served as a TD from 1973 to 1977 and was elected a senator in 1977, 1981, and 1989.

He is the father of sitting Westport town councillor Myles Staunton.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring said he was “very saddened” to hear of the sudden death of “ a personal friend of mine”, who was a “prominent Westport businessman” and a “key figure in the local community”.

Minister Ring described Myles as the most “honourable, decent man I have come across in politics”.

The Minister extended his sincere sympathies to his extended family.

Mr Staunton’s remains are reposing at his home today (Friday ) at Streamstown, Westport from 1pm until 5pm with removal to St Mary’s Church, Westport, to arrive at 7pm. Requiem Mass will take place on Saturday at 12.30pm with burial afterwards at Aughavale Cemetery.
