Maloney calls for council to look into refuse levies for holiday homes

Fianna Fáil councillor Jimmy Maloney has asked that Mayo County Council look into the possibility of imposing a refuse levy on holiday homes in the county. The June meeting of the council was discussing the council’s new litter management plan when Cllr Maloney floated the idea.

“We should look at the possibility of imposing a levy on holiday homes in the county to deal with the issue of illegal dumping at holiday homes in Mayo,” Cllr Maloney said. “It could solve a problem if there was a levy and people could leave their rubbish out to be collected from them, because you often find rubbish dumped after people have left.”

Fine Gael councillor Johnny O’Malley agreed with Cllr Maloney’s suggestion and told the meeting he had challenged someone about the problem. “I saw someone dumping and challenged them about it and all I got was ‘na-na-na’ pretending they didn’t understand what I was saying. But they knew bloody well what I was saying and knew what they were doing.”
