A Castlebar woman with a number of previous convictions was ordered to pay a shop owner €15 after she pleaded guilty to theft from his premises. The court was told that on February 15 2011 Winifred Reilly entered the Emo filling station in Kilkelly, Co Mayo, where she stole two sandwiches and a orange drink to the value of €7.88. The owner of the shop when he looked at the CCTV saw Reilly commit the theft.
Judge Mary Devins told the court that she was wondering what she could do as bringing the case will have cost the State probably 100 times more than the value of the theft, but she said the owner of the shop also had to be protected. Judge Devins ordered Reilly to pay €15 to the owner of the shop, barred her from entering the premises in the future, and applied the Probation Act.
