A Kiltimagh man who pleaded guilty to drink driving after he was stopped by gardaí was convicted and fined €600 and disqualified from driving for three years this week. Peter Byrne, Cuilgar, Kiltimagh, pleaded guilty in Castlebar District Court.
Garda Robert Hennigan told the court he stopped the defendant on February 27, 2010 at 1.15am on the N17 and arrested him and brought him to Castlebar Garda Station where Byrne gave a urine sample which returned a reading of 338mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine. Solicitor for Byrne, Cathy McDarby, told the court that her client was a 47-year-old man, who suffers from depression and is currently attending the mental health services in Swinford, and that he is an alcoholic. She also told the court that he recently had been involved in an accident where he fell off a ladder and had suffered a brain injury from which he was recovering.
Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Byrne €600 and disqualified him from driving for three years.
