Prestigious award for Castlebar sculptor

Castlebar based sculptor Cathal Mc Carthy has been nominated by Westmeath County Council for a major arts award. The artist was selected for his public art commission, “Stream Spire”, which can be seen adorning the entrance to Mullingar town park on Austin Friars Street.

The new sculpture has received a phenomenal response since it was first installed a few months ago. The innovative work made from hydro-formed stainless steel spheres was selected after an open public competition. Designed to float in the air like a ribbon of water droplets, the highly polished surface reflects the life of the surrounding streetscape. The piece also celebrates the work of the writer James Joyce who visited Mullingar on a number of occasions.

The award is part of the Allianz Business to Arts awards sponsored by businessman Jim McNaughton.

Mr McCarthy, who is originally from Ballintubber, has a number of public art pieces in Co Mayo, the most well known of which is "The Player" at Ballindine.
