Drunk man who couldn’t get a taxi drove home

A man who claimed that he waited two and a half hours for a taxi before he decided to drive home when drunk, was disqualified from driving for four years at this week’s sitting of Castlebar District Court.

Sean Moran, Glencorrib, Shrule was stopped by gardaí driving on New Street, Ballinrobe at 4.45am on September 26 2010.

The defendant was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving. A blood sample provided showed a reading of 150mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

The court heard that the defendant had three pints while in a nightclub in Ballinrobe and waited for two and a half hours for a taxi before he decided to drive.

Moran, who has seven previous road traffic convictions, including a previous drink driving conviction, was convicted and fined €600 by Judge Mary Devins and disqualified from driving for four years. The disqualification is not to come into effect until July 1 in order for the defendant to arrange lifts to his work, which is 30 miles away from his home.
