Verdict of accidental death in Gallagher case

A verdict of accidental death was returned by a jury following an eight-day inquest into the death of Achill woman Ashling Gallagher, who died in a road collision on the N59 in 2004.

The 22-year-old’s van collided with a cement truck near Mulranny. The family of Ashling claimed that the van skidded on an unfinished, temporary road surface, which had no warning signs. Mayo County Council denied responsibility for the crash.

A statement issued by Mayo County Council in response to verdict said: “Mayo County Council notes the verdict issued by the Coroner’s Court ... the council wishes to take this opportunity of again extending its sympathies to the members of the Gallagher family following Ashling’s tragic death.”

Civil proceeding have been initiated against the local authority by the Gallagher family.
